  8. Across – Cryptonyte

1 Hit! Hit! That’s topping! (7,5) WHIPPED CREAM and the trend of terrific opening clue continues 🙂
9 There is no point in Gaussian distribution for some reptiles (7) IGUANAS* but Tony, “there is no point” is not the same as “remove one point”. The clue as it stands implies: remove (S,S,N) from GAUSSIAN.
    10 Recluse not given intro, one’s nearly got a fainting feeling (7) {-intro}VERT I GO{-t}
11 What’s behind the scenes in Rome? Nero fiddled after the onset of gutting (9) G REENROOM*
12 Open a firearm, head out, move fast! (5) {-g}UN ZIP
13 Seasoned PHL player from Chennai takes the sixth of penalties (7) VE{T}ERAN
15 One gains a lot where credit is due (6) USURER [CD]
18 Labels of street maps are incorrect (6) ST AMPS*
20 Daily editor comes in with tabloid’s last piece, say cheese! (7) CH{ED D}AR
    24 Hotter without starters – more chilly (5) {-sp}ICIER
25 Smooth beach party? (9) SANDBLAST [CD]
    27 Open University’s large book contains many a result (7) OU T{C}OME
28 Pour water on some chamois tents (7) MOISTEN [T] The easiest clue in the puzzle…
29 A talented footballer is capable of this fling (7,5) PASSING FANCY [2] An elegant end to the Across set, although I’m not sure if ‘passing fancy’ is technically equal to ‘fling’? It may lead to a ‘fling’ but…anyway, I liked the clue!

    Down – Diogenes
    (Very nice overall)

1 Woman grins uncontrollably, one probably does so before suspending a habit (6) W RINGS*
2 Get used to popular therapy to suppress cold (5) IN {-c}URE
3 About time to forsake repentance for atonement (7) P{ENAN}CE
4 Management to make a call about withdrawing incentives (8) DI {SPOS}<- AL Excellent clue
5 Make over of a siren (6) RE VAMP
6 Chambers misprinted altruism, throwing off the student (7) ATRIUMS*
    7 A diner’s snoring raised anger in a neighbour’s airline (8) PI{ZZ ERI<-}A
8 Perhaps pro emcee, mostly (7) COMPERE* I wish there was a way to avoid 'mostly' for the definition…
14 I came back to eat, not exactly to starve (8) {EMAC I}<- ATE* Vintage Vinod!
16 In Alaska, people ski, mostly natives (7) ESKIMOS [T]
17 A delivery guy is after fresh chain (8) CHINA* MAN
    19 Being a character (7) PERSON A
21 Fed up having cheese grill (7) DE{BRIE}F<-
22 Judge dopes solicitor in the head (6) ASSES S The breakup ASSES+S is done often but I like the fresh treatment of the surface
23 Mean prick close to insanity (6) STING Y
26 Follow article about technical honcho (3,2) A{CT,O}N

    June 3, 2009 at 6:33 am

    • Thx Shuchi.

I tried hard to avoid “mostly” in the COMPERE clue, but without success. I had half a mind to use MCee instead of emcee, but it’s not a word. Any suggestion?

Some solvers argued that EMACIATE is not exactly STARVE, but a possible outcome of starvation. I agree and admit I assumed some setter’s license here since the wordplay’s very simple.
