  3. The clues are getting tighter with every grid – and I love it! 🙂 Admittedly, there were a couple clues I got only because this was a grid and I had the letters – might not have cracked them in isolation. (Tension, Forbidden, Learning). Struggled more with the Northwest corner for some reason. Personal favorites: Interest, Nurse, Alarm, Theory.

    I have a question about earths – the clue is very sound, but is that an acceptable word? If it is, so should be ‘Marses’ But somehow one sounds correct, the other doesn’t. (I just want to know from the ‘constructing’ POV; it’s a very good clue).

    As always, a pleasure to solve, guys! Keep them coming.

  4. Solved at last!

    Fav clues: 9A, 13A, 15A, 8D, 16D, 27D

    Across

    9. {NO 1’S NET}<-
    10. ESSOIGN [T]
    11. E X{H}I BIT
    12. I M{IT}ATE
    13. F {-m}ORBID DEN
    15. N URSE*: "at heart, one" is tough to spot, cleverly done!
    16. PA{LA}CES: nice clue, just that the surface made me think: is it only one article in chateaus, shouldn't it be articles?
    19. DEE PEST*
    20. ALA R{-o}M{-e}
    21. A PART T{M}ENT: is the definition "with many quarters"? That's an adjective, but the answer is a noun. As long as the clue signals somehow that a nounal solution is wanted, it's fine I think – this one doesn't do that. I hear that Azed allows verb phrases that could stand as subject for their corresponding nouns. By that standard "has many quarters" would be better than "with many quarters".
    25. T{ANGLE}D
    26. OB SERVE
    28. M{-A+ON}STER
    29. N {EIT}<- HER

    • Taking back all that about 21a, since the definition is simply “quarters”. Oversight – sorry!

  5. Down

    1. ITSELF: Can’t work out the anno fully. one = I, cross = T, brownie = ELF, point = S? That leaves parts unexplained, I guess there’s a better anno.
    2. ANCHOR: damper or clamper?
    3. LIMB: Another anno I can’t figure out. Is there a typo in the clue?
    4. UNITED dd
    5. DE{SIGN}ED
    6. ASSIGNMENT: ASS{IG N MEN}T
    7. DI{SAG}RE E: “in slump” => slump is in?
    8. INTEREST dd
    14. INC O MPLETE*: I like the first part of the clue “unfinished business in America”. How is Ohio = O? Ohio is OH.
    16. PLAYTIME dd
    17. L{EARN}ING
    18. STANDARD*
    22. A{MO}UNT
    23. {-h}EARTHS: Very nice surface! Is ‘earth’ valid in the plural?
    24. T{HE}ORY
    27. S{-l}LIP<-: Clever use of 'downed', 'neglecting'.
